Finding Balance with Ayurveda
Jan 16, 2019Ayurveda has helped me find balance and improve the quality of my own life. And I want the same for YOU. Understanding this simple yet powerful knowledge can truly transform your life. I’d love to see more yogis and yoga communities embracing Ayurveda because the practice of yoga goes hand in hand with that of Ayurveda. I feel yoga is only one piece of the whole puzzle. Even if you have regular yoga practice and feel great in the body, If you kept throwing wrong foods into your body and leading a lifestyle that doesn’t serve you, you would soon feel out of balance and that could potentially manifest as a dis-ease.
There are 3 different doshas (mind-body types) in Ayurveda – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. If you're new to this concept, check out one of my other blogs to learn more👇
What's your dosha? Discovering the 3 doshas, the Ayurvedic mind-body types of Vata, Pitta & Kapha

Your dominant dosha is the one that tends to go out of balance (and gives you a trouble) so you’d like to determine which might be your dominant dosha and you want to learn the ways to keep it in balance. Can you imagine what kind of foods and activities aggravate each dosha? If you are predominantly Vata (cold, wind-like dosha associated with movement), cold foods & drinks and constant traveling should be avoided. If you have a lot of Pitta (hot, fire-like dosha) in you, it’s best to avoid spicy foods and too much competition. Someone with Kapha dosha (solid and heavy, earth-like dosha) should avoid heavy oily foods, oversleeping and lack of exercise, for example.
With this in mind, it’s not too difficult to imagine what foods and activities help keep each dosha in balance. A Vata dominant person benefits greatly from having warm meals and drinks and establishing routines in life. If you have a lot of Pitta, then it’d be a good idea to incorporate more cooling foods and have some playful down time. If Kapha is your most dominant dosha, then you’d like to eat light and use warming spices to help you with your slow, sluggish digestion and also make sure you have a regular exercise routine in place.
This is just a super simplified way of introducing you to some basic concepts of Ayurveda. I hope this has sparked some interests in you to learn more about it. My hope is that you feel motivated to incorporate Ayurveda into your daily life so that together with your yoga practice, you’ve got more tools under your belt to find balance and achieve optimal health and wellbeing.
